The excitement from the holidays is finally winding down! It's time to get back into the swing of things with your monthly roundup of costume friendly events in the LA area!

This weekend the Pure Costumes team headed to Long Beach Comic Con, for a weekend of cosplay hunting! This smaller con is perfect for getting the comic book convention experience without the crowds! At Long Beach Comic Con, you can find hundreds of vendors and artists, panels and industry professionals! You'll even find things you won't find at your typical con! At LBCC you can watch live wrestling matches or catch movies at a Geek Film Festival! While we were there, we were on the hunt for our favorite part of conventions, the costumes!

In case you didn't know, Disneyland opened its doors on July 17th, 1955. Over the years, Disneyland has gone through many changes, but has always been a place for both adults and children to have fun. In honor of Disneyland's upcoming birthday, I thought it would be fun to educate people who might not know much about the history of the park.

With President's Day coming up, I know that many students are working on history projects or school plays that may involve dressing up as a past president or some other historical figure. I thought I'd highlight some of our newest historical figures costumes that are sure to ace your presentation.

Here in sunny Los Angeles, our local Renaissance Faire is currently entertaining every Saturday and Sunday until May 20th. This year, on select weekends they have special themes that they encourage their guests to dress up with. Our Pure Costumes team decided to attend the weekend of May 5th, which was themed "Time Traveler Weekend" which included a steampunk costume contest. Although we didn't go to enter the contest, we went to (a) participate in a fun dress up event, and (b) see what other people have come up with for their Steampunk costumes. We were not disappointed, there were tons of attendees wearing great steampunk and renaissance themed costumes.

Over the years, sexy Halloween costumes have become the norm. This has resulted in a social response of backlash amongst women regarding the hyper-sexualization of yet another commodity. In contrast, the sales of sexy costumes reinforced the idea amongst manufacturers that this is what consumers want. Yet at the end of the season, there are lists and lists of costumes that receive criticism for their racy designs. I personally believe that if the true meaning of feminism is to allow women the freedom to choose just as men seem to have the ability to do, then we should put away our wagging fingers and just enjoy the holiday.

So many people, young and old, have a special relationship with Disney and its beloved fairytale princesses. For almost a century now, Disney has enchanted young kids with their re-telling of timeless tales of magic and wonder through film. With characters who teach us to dream, love, hope, and stand up for what we is right, kids everywhere have learned to follow their hearts and to take destiny into their own hands. It's no wonder that year after year, Disney princesses are always among the most popular Halloween costumes. This year, why not up dress your little one as her favorite character so that she can become a princess for a night?

Anime Expo 2018 was a hot one both literally and figuratively! Temperatures this weekend reached over 100 degrees but that didn't stop cosplayers from showing up with their best! Anime Expo is North America's largest Japanese pop culture convention. This weekend we met people who flew in from all over the country to share their love for Anime, Manga, and other aspects of Japanese Otaku, or nerd, culture! You can always tell what Anime is most popular based on what cosplays you see most at AX so we went on the hunt for this year's best anime and cosplay trends!

If you are not familiar with the internet term “Creepypasta”, the word is used to describe modern horror stories that have been passed around on internet forums or other websites to frighten readers. Some stories use the same characters over again, but in different scenarios (such as Slenderman), while other stories are pretty much copied and pasted exactly as they are (Ben Drowned, Russian Sleep Experiment). Many of these stories or frightening characters have been circulating the internet so long that you don’t have to dig so deep to read about them. We’ve accumulated a list of our top 6 creepiest Creepypasta’s in no particular order:

Whether you're dressing up as a wasteland warrior, a steampunk scientist, or a rusty robot, there's a high chance your costume may need some rusted metal. You could go find some old metal scraps in the junkyard, but you might want something with less risk of catching Tetanus. With this easy technique, you can make any prop look like an old, rusty one!

Be sure to join the rest of the country on September 19th to celebrate National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Some people like to go all out and dress like a pirate as well, but you can get away by just talking like one for the day. If you're not sure quite how to talk like a pirate, I put together this infographic to get you started!
