DIY Ugly Christmas Sweater

With the holidays fast approaching, many people are gearing up to host their holiday parties. Of course, parties are always more fun with a theme, and ugly sweater parties have been growing in popularity over the past few years. A quick Google search showed me that an ugly sweater is going to run me an average of $30 or $40 dollars, depending on how ugly I want it, I guess. I don’t know about you, but I can’t justify spending that much money on something that’s actually called “ugly”. Last week, my best friend, Stephanie, asked if I or my husband had an ugly sweater that she and her fiancé could borrow. Like me, she didn't want to spend much money on one either. Since I did not have any to lend her, I offered to make them for her instead! The best part? It didn't cost me a cent. She gave me one of her red cardigans and a red sweater vest that her fiancé had. I dug into my Christmas decorations bin and found some small ornaments, decorations, and even a couple of dog toys that I was willing to part with. I sewed them all directly onto the sweaters and what resulted was some concoction that was a mixture of cute and ugly all at the same time.

To make your own ugly Christmas sweater, you might not have to spend a dime either. You can use any sweater you already own. It doesn’t even have to be a plain sweater, maybe patterns or stripes would make it look even uglier. But maybe at least stick to a holiday color scheme. If you don’t have Christmas ornaments and decorations already, you can always get them for cheap at the dollar store. Then get to sewing. Even better, if you’re not handy with the needle, a hot glue gun can be your best friend.
